The Brass Band of the Tri-State attended the North American Brass Band Championship in New Albany, Indiana at Indiana University Southeast. The band received first place in the Explorer Division of the competition. The competition included 24 bands representing the states of Arkansas, Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina, Maryland, Georgia, Virginia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Kansas, and New Jersey. The number of bands appearing at this venue is an indication of the dedication and talent that it took to be a part of this great competition. The competition is held once each year for bands to see who is best in their division. However, one only need attend the concerts held during the competition to see that even the lowest scoring band is in a place of honor.

The Brass Band of the Tri-State was founded in 1995 by Jackson Hill. The band is currently under the direction of Gary Clarke, elementary music teacher at Fort Gay, West Virginia and resident of South Point, Ohio. It derives its members from Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia and includes music educators, high school and college students, professionals in all fields and retirees providing an outlet for serious amateur brass and percussion musicians.

The band maintains a busy performance schedule with numerous concerts and rehearses every Tuesday evening from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Vinson Middle School Band Room on Piedmont Road in the west end of Huntington, West Virginia. Also, the Brass Band of the Tri-State sponsors the Ashland Brass Band Festival, a NABBA sanctioned event, featuring outstanding brass bands from the NABBA organization. The festival is held at the Central Park Amphitheater in Ashland, Kentucky. This year's festival will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2007.
